The story of 'The Bridge at Remagen' presented in exciting ,if sometimes historically inaccurate, fashion
'The Bridge at Remagen' is a good, solid WWII film on a fascinating aspect of the latter part of the war in Europe. I wish the film would have stuck a little more closely to the actual historical facts as they are presented in Ken Hechler's wonderful book of the same name as the film. The soldiers in the film that are played by Ben Gazarra and George Segal are composites of the true life heroes who took the Bridge. There acting is quite good but they play their characters in a cynical '60s Vietnam era way. Robert Vaughn is excellent as the aristocratic German officer whose job is to destroy the bridge at all cost. E.G. Marshall also lends capable support as an American officer in charge of the operation.

The military equipment used in the film is quite first rate. The location for the bridge is very close in look to the actual location on the Rhine. The film contains some good combat scenes. I wish some of the German methods of retaking the bridge that are well depicted in Hechler's book could have been shown such as the frog men, etc.

The DVD picture and sound is very good overall and the DVD contains an interesting theatrical trailer. Too bad the History Channel did not make a documentary that could have been on the DVD showing the History vs Hollywood of the actual taking of 'The Bridge at Remagen' which separates the facts from the fiction of the actual events that is a nice feature on other DVDs like 'Patton', 'A Bridge Too Far', and 'Tora, Tora, Tora'.

I would recommend to viewers of the film the edition of Ken Hechler's classic book 'The Bridge at Remagen' by Pictorial Histories Pub that contains a fascinating article on the making of the film and the difficulties the film faced in shooting.

One of the GREAT war movies of the 1960's.
The 1960's will long be remembered for a series of extremely campy and corny WWII flicks, such as Battle of the Bulge, etc. This isn't to say that the story line in Bridge at Remangen isn't cliche'd at times, but overall, this is perhaps THE best WWII movie made in the sixties - I love this movie and have watched it at least ten or fifteen times!

The historical accuracy of this one is what seriously impresses me. They shot on location in Europe, they duplicated the full-scale look of the original bridge to perfection, and they used a lot of legit period-perfect equipment making this one. There are brief cameos by German 251 armored halftracks (very rare for that time), they make good use of a PKW staff car, (very rare then and now) and the weapons and uniforms are extremely well done. The Luftwaffe guys are even using what appear to be original 88mm flak guns (at least three of them). Typically, the Germans are a bit "too clean" for that period of the war, but the film portrays their personel and equipment problems very well. The American armored unit is equipped with M24 Chafee tanks instead of the plain old M4 Shermans as they should've been, but the M24 was entering service at about that time, so I can overlook this as I presume they found some little NATO country over there still using a lot of the M24s.

I don't particularly care for Ben Gazara's character and the movie would've been just as good (or better) without him, but all things aside, this is a MUST HAVE movie for WWII movie buffs.

Excellent historic film about world war II, how it was taken the last bridge to cross the Rhin and goes for Berlin making shorter the war.

An action protrayal of an important event of World War II. I think you will like this if you like historical movies with the additions of Hollywood.
